Editor’s Note No. 1:
In America, we take our right to free speech guaranteed by the First Amendment to the Constitution for granted.
What we overlook are the reasons why our founding fathers felt it important to expressly articulate this right as part of our nation’s Constitution.
Most likely, it was because many of these founding fathers had a firsthand knowledge of what it was like to live under a government that was not constrained from intruding upon people speaking their minds, in as much as the nations in Europe from which they came did not guarantee any right to free speech … and to this day, still do not.
For example, see the video above of the office in Germany charged with monitoring the internet for what that government regards as “hate speech.”
And, likewise in England, the same attitude is displayed by that government’s present-day monitoring of its citizens “speech.” Do you doubt it? See the following video:
All of which is to point out how important it is for us all to be on guard against those in America that want to penalize speech just because their ideology would have it be defined as “hate speech” that — in accord with their belief structure — should be punished as a matter of law.
Why?
Because if the powers of government are permitted to be brought to bear to reduce your freedom to believe, and therefore express, what you believe to be true, the erosion of your rights to free speech will ultimately work to restrain your right to worship as you see fit in accord with the Word of God.
And, this is a course of action that a people only permits at their peril. For those who may remain doubtful of this fact, they may want to ask those members of the Christian church who were beheaded by guillotine during the French Revolution or those who fled the Church of England to practice their faith as they felt appropriate in the colonies. They were willing to suffer many hardships to establish for our eventual benefit … which is to live in one of the only nations on the face of the earth where your right to publicly express your beliefs as you see fit are protected from the government that would rule otherwise if it were permitted to do so by the people it exists to serve.
Just saying …
